Success is Bittersweet

After 5 nights of intensive crying, both by the son and I, I am proud to announce Seth Pacifier-Free! :D

Thanks to the encouragement of friends, I managed to hang tough and resist giving him the pacy in those middle-of-nights crying sagas. It was my nightmare as much as Seth’s! He will wake up whimpering and searching for his beloved and I will hug him and kiss him and soothe him back to sleep. This will repeat for at least 3 times each night, increasing with intensity near dawn. Finally we would both end up crying and hugging each other to sleep. In between sobs, I would be begging the Man to give son the pacifier and he would refuse us.

I’m so glad it’s finally over!! And we’re seeing changes in the boy that we attribute to our pacifier weaning. He blabbers more now, and is more keen to repeat words after us. Without the pacifier, he has reduced his need for the pillow as well and thus a drastic reduction in his ’stoned’ stage. He used to love to suck on the pacy and tickle his pillows as he rests, going into a semi-conscious stage. We called that his ‘nua’ time. In Hokkien, that is equivalent to super duper slack times.

In the car, with nothing to suck on, he is more alert as he looks around at the passing scenery. When he is tired, he can easily fall asleep anytime now, without having to ask for the pacifier.

And finally, for the first time ever since he has the pacifier, he can sleep through the night without waking up to search for his soother. And this means a full night’s sleep for us as well! Hurray!! Note to self: Never ever start Sara on the pacifier!! :p

Final farewell to Ah Du before I banished it into the diaper bin! (It had to be the diaper bin so Seth won’t dig through it!)
