Farewell is Forever

Just the other day I read in the papers about the government trying to make cycling safer for cyclists. I was thinking to myself as I skimped through the article briefly, “This doesn’t concern me since I no longer cycle.” And today I got a shocking sms telling me that my long ago friend from JC passed away yesterday, after falling from her bicycle and going into a coma where she was pronounced brain dead.

She was a bubbly girl when I met her on the first day of school. She has a perpetual wide grin on her face, and with her ‘Donald Duck’ voice and outgoing nature, her leadership skills and fun-loving stunts, she was obviously one of the popular girls in class. We soon became fast friends. With another girl, we were the 3 musketeers. Inseparable, always up to mischief. Our motto was, “To live without masks. To be true to ourselves.” There were no pretense, only 3 real hearts trying to be our real selves. We were sick of trying to please others, sick of trying to maintain an image to impress others, we just wanted to be ourselves.

That was our teenage years. Sweet seventeen! After that, we were consumed by this monster called work. We drifted apart as we got busy with work. And as we left school, we lost touch with one another. Occasionally, our paths will meet and we were like old friends again. But we never really tried to stay in touch. Taking for granted that we will meet again somehow. And tonight I’ll meet her again for one last time. This time, the farewell will be forever.

It’s really funny how you don’t miss someone until you realise they are gone forever. Yupei, I miss you.

Life is so fragile. We never know when we’ll lose a loved one. It’s too late to be filled with regrets now. There’s just too many friends that I’ve put off meeting up with. It’s pure laziness and procrastination on my part. Is it ever possible to have done my best as a friend whenever someone passed on?
